Inspection and Monitoring Technologies

ARtx has experience testing and monitoring concrete for civil infrastructure across the entire concrete lifecycle, from placement to removal.


For new construction, we consult with owners, designers, contractors, and suppliers to ensure compliance with specifications, mitigation of site-specific risks, and predictable practices that are mutually beneficial to all parties. ARtx has deep experience with:

  • Standards development related to reinforced concrete
  • Analysis, design, and specification writing for a wide variety of complex, reinforced concrete structures
  • Standard fresh property methods including slump, air, temperature, compressive strength, and flexural strength
  • In-place strength testing methods including rebound hammer, penetration resistance, acoustic methods, and coring
  • Structural performance monitoring treatments for suspect conditions including strain, tilt, and/or vibration tracking while accounting for dynamic temperature and wind conditions 
  • Laboratory testing and AASHTO/CCRL quality system development and accreditation maintenance


For existing infrastructure, we consult with stakeholders to re-discover unknown structural information through non-destructive testing and monitoring and help them plan for maintenance, upgrade, and retrofits. ARtx has experience with:

  • Non-destructive testing methods spanning from electromagnetic methods including ground penetrating radar (GPR), to electrochemical methods including half-cell and resistivity, to acoustic methods including sonic echo and parallel seismic
  • Supplemental mapping methods including subsurface probing, borescope inspection, historical document recovery, and reverse engineering
  • Service life quantification through structural testing and monitoring, environmental monitoring, finite element modeling, and repair scenario analysis


ARtx leverages experience in geotechnical and structural design, awareness of industry needs, and familiarity with state-of-the-art technologies to identify potential areas for impactful technology development.

Investigation, Maintenance, and Life Extension Strategies

With a decentralized portfolio of assets, decision making becomes exceedingly complex. Logistical burdens are increased, local availability of materials, equipment, and specialized labor are variable, and the environmental demands on structures may be significantly different. These portfolio owners typically have an especially diverse group of stakeholders, elevated personnel safety priorities, and competing budgets. 


ARtx leadership has experience in running investigation, maintenance, and/or life extension programs as the owner and in implementing programs as a consultant for a variety of industry areas:

  • Telecommunication towers and foundations
  • Electric transmission towers and foundations
  • State Department of Transportation bridge foundations
  • Federal Department of Defense critical structure networks


Our focus on lowering the operating costs of infrastructure through technology development comes from our experience with these large portfolios and the many opportunities and challenges we have seen in operating them.
